The Foursquare API was released today and enables developers to build applications that interact with the foursquare platform. The API can be used to create new ways to check-in to foursquare or to visualize the data generated by the foursquare community.
Below are links to some interesting applications people have built already using the API. I particularly like the Oyster card RFID example ‘Fourtap‘ (See video below). There are a growing network of businesses who are already offering rewards to people using foursquare. Organizations like London Transport could use the API to develop this concept even more and encourage people to use public transport for example, by recommending personalized location based incentives based on their travel activity. Wonder when Gowalla will follow suit and release their API?
