When Chatroulette Couldn’t Get Weirder – ManyCam

February 25th, 2010  |  Friends  |  Categories: Augmented Reality, Inspiration, Interactive, Online, Social, Technology, Video  |  Tags: , , , , , , , ,  |

ManyCam is freeware that modifies your webcam video stream to give you augmented effects including adding a fiery trail to your movement, face-tracking masks and accessories, effects that are reminiscent of PhotoBooth, a distortion bar covering your eyes to remain somewhat anonymous, and the ability to draw on your video stream.

It’s augmented reality for your webcam stream.  Just in case you were already getting bored with Chatroulette.

Recognizr Augmented Identity App

February 25th, 2010  |  Friends  |  Categories: Augmented Reality, Inspiration, Mobile, Social  |  Tags: , , , , , ,  |

Ever wanted to learn more than you probably ever really should about that random person you just met 2 seconds ago? With the upcoming “Recognizr” app for iPhone and Android this dream is now (augmented) reality. The Astonishing Tribe is attempting to mash up face recognition technology, computer vision, cloud computing, social networking and augmented reality into the world of Augmented Identity.

The app essentially works like this: the user points the camera at a person across the room. Facial recognition software creates a 3-D model of the person’s mug and sends it across a server where it’s matched with an identity in the database. A cloud server conducts the facial recognition and sends back the subject’s name as well as links to any social networking sites the person has provided access to. Voila.

Note: Prediction becomes a reality http://gspdigital.com/?p=715 .  This app requires a user to opt in to the service in order to be recognized.

Photo tagger

November 11th, 2009  |  Friends  |  Categories: Online, Social, Technology  |  Tags: , , ,  |

Face.com has released it’s Facial recognition tagging app for Facebook called ‘Photo Tagger’. It scans your FB photo’s and lets you tag faces it identifies, grouping multiple shots to make it easy to tag large albums or edit tagged ones.

Once a ‘friend’ is identified, the app prompts him or her to approve the tag — a crucial privacy step, since he or she may not want to be labeled in a photo. It also works with a member’s current photo-privacy settings on Facebook.

The app also comes with a new Photo Tagger feature, dubbed ‘Face Alerts’, which is like ‘Google Alerts’ for faces. You’re notified via FB or email when new public photos of you or your friends are uploaded. More from WSJ here.

It makes these connections based on a number of features, such as clothing choice, hair color, facial expression, and composition within the frame. It presents both similarities and differences in these characteristics, remdining us of our connectedness and uniqueness, creating strong visual patterns and playful juxtapositions.

Face-Recognizing Social Screensaver

July 15th, 2009  |  Friends  |  Categories: Inspiration, Online, Social, Technology  |  Tags: , , ,  |

The SCR Mug Shooter uses your webcam and facial recognition software to take morphed photos of your face, then puts them in a queue to display on people’s Mug Shooter screensavers around the world.

The execution is not awesome — if you use it you’ll notice a lot of lagging and bugginess — but it’s a neat idea all the same.
