This data visualization of civilian casualties in Afghanistan shows what web browsers can render without the use of plugins. In the words of the Developer and Designer, George Michael Brower:
That this visualization can be viewed in-browser is a testament to the promise of modern web technologies such as WebGL, HTML5 and CSS3, all of which were leveraged in this piece. As browsers adopt support for these standards, developers and their audience will enjoy fewer barriers to rich experiences, hopefully increasing the visibility and appreciation of code as art. Thanks to Ricardo Cabello for three.js as well as Chris Lauritzen and Jono Brandel.

An installation by artist Nils Volker animates ordinary plastic bags mounted on the wall, making them expand and contract — and interact with passersby — by using microcontrollers and cooling fans. The result is a slightly eerie and captivating interactive experience.

Excellent example of the power of technology to completely alter our relationship to physical structures. Other examples here and here.
The technology involved, Architectural Projection Mapping, will be used as a part of Vimeo’s first annual Vimeo Festival + Awards going down in NYC, October 8-9 this year.

Interaxon plans to make a splash at the 2010 Winter Olympics with Bright Ideas – the world’s largest thought-controlled installation. Their technology allows brainwaves to control live lightshows at the CN Tower, Parliament, and Niagara Falls. It seems like one of those things you have to experience to believe, yet a fascinating look at the frontier of thought-controlled interactions.
There are live video feeds of the person controlling the lights, though they leave a bit to be desired as to if the technology is as cool as promised.

Here is a video describing the technology:
