Bing “Pays” Farmville Users to Fan Them

Interesting article from AllFacebook.com talks about how Bing advertised through Farmville and incentivized users to become their Facebook fan by offering them Farmville cash.

As a result, Bing got 400,000 Facebook fans in one day, with Bing posts showing up in their newsfeeds.  Is this a clever new way to advertise on Facebook, along the lines of offering a free limited gift in the old Facebook days?  In the current realm of Facebook, what other advertising opportunities do you see?

Make your own location-based app using Socialight

Similar to Ning, Socialight allows you to create your own social networks, but this service is location-based, allowing you to create Gowalla or Foursquare types of networks instead of a Myspace/Facebook online-based network.

From their site:

Socialight lets anyone tag the world with their content – stories, reviews, information, ideas, media, or whatever you like. People can see and share with mobile devices or the web. It’s like having the ability to attach virtual sticky notes anywhere on Earth.

With your community on Socialight, you create a new channel for connecting with your audience where and when they want to hear from you. We let any person, brand, or media owner create local communities around branded and user-created content. Simple.

This has a lot of potential for individuals and brands to create a customized map and experience for users in real-world environments as they move about.  There are a few brand examples on their site for Ford, Corona, and the Travel Channel to check out.  Pretty neat tool.

Gatsby – Social Stranger Networking

March 2nd, 2010  |  Sosia Bert  |  Categories: Geolocation, Inspiration, Mobile, Social  |  Tags: , , , , ,  |  No Comments »

Gatsby is a new service that works on top of Foursquare to introduce people who have similar interests and are checked in near each other.

Foursquare users add Gatsby as a friend (who looks like a younger Jeeves from Ask.com), and the connections are made based on immediate location and interests that the user self-proclaims during the sign up on Gatsby (eg. dogs, beer, shopping).

It does seem like there is a gap here that could  be better filled – maybe by connecting people who regularly check in to several of the same locations AND have similar interests.

Who knows if this will take off – meeting a stranger based on a single common interest might be a little odd, but it’d be interesting to make connections with people in the same location.
