Facebook and Spotify Get Cozy

June 21st, 2011  |  Friends  |  Categories: Music, Online  |  Tags: , , ,  |

Facebook is partnering with Spotify to add music streaming to the site. While I’ve never actually missed the ability to play music within Facebook, I wonder if we’ll collectively have a “how have we lived without this” moment in a few weeks.

Listening to music with friends within Facebook already sounds like what turntable.fm offers but with a much larger audience. Depending on how many friends you have, that could be good or bad. It will be an interesting social experience nonetheless.

Google’s +1 Button

June 7th, 2011  |  Katy  |  Categories: Inspiration, Online, Social  |  Tags: , , ,  |

Google’s finally done it and taken the +1 sharing button public.

The official word: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/1-button-for-websites-recommend-content.html

More info: http://services.google.com/fh/files/misc/Final_Advertiser_Plus_1_One_Sheeter.pdf

Technical info about +1 Button Implementation:  Here and Here

What does this mean for GSP and why might it be useful? Consider this as an additional sharing button along with FB & Twitter.

It’s still in the experimental stage when displaying in Google results, but there is a good chance that it could take off in the future and that websites could have some level of evaluation for improved rankings based on how many +1′s they receive.

An App to Connect You with Your Neighbors

Home Elephant is an app that connects you to your neighbors.

Okay, this app seems a little whitebread but the underlying idea is interesting.

When is an app going to come out that connects you with the people that are immediately around you?

Imagine a sort of virtual billboard that populated based on your location – being able to poll the people nearby to find out where the best lunch deals are, asking to carpool, alerting to gas leaks, and to ask, “what happened on Kearny street this morning with all the firetrucks?”

Toothtag – Teach Your Android to Do Things

Toothtag is a new Android app that allows you to tag people (by sensing their phones) and locations (by sensing wifi hotspots and more).

You can then customize actions that will happen when you are near those places or people.

You could get an alert when your friend is nearby, or automatically check in on Foursquare when you enter your gym.

Toothtag is actually only a showcase application created by a software company called Neuaer to demonstrate their proximity platform, on which they want others to build more applications that will use the device and location-detecting capabilities.

The platform (and Toothtag) uses Bluetooth, Wifi, and NFC (Near Field Communication) technologies.
